Sewing Basics ~ Fridays 7/11-8/1 from 7:00 to 9:30PM

Instructor: Crissy Phillips of Christine Phillips Design

Location: Old Pine Community Center

Dust off your sewing machine! In this four week, workshop intensive students will learn basic sewing techniques of functional, practical stitching. Students will also learn basic machine use, fabric selection and preparation, and basic pattern reading. We will be working with a simple pattern that incorporates all of these skills. Students will leave this workshop confidant in their sewing skills and inspired to sew, sew, sew! Class is suitable for both beginners and people with limited or no sewing experience.

Disclaimer- Due to the high demand, PSC Sewing Basics will be offered every month. To accommodate your schedules, we alternate sessions when classes are held on weeknights or weekends.

 

 

Fabric Row Tour ~ Saturday 5/17 from 10:00 to 12:00PM

Do large fabric stores seem intimidating? Do you want to ask questions, but don't know how? Wondering where to find fabric for your project and which fabric best suits your project? Philadelphia Sewing Collective is here to help put the joy back into sewing! On this tour, you will learn the necessary tools to lead and guide you in all aspects of fashion, design, general recreational sewing and more. No need to be intimidated! These stores welcome your ideas and patronage. Join us in this partnership between PSC and Fabric Row, where you come out with a full knowledge of where to source all your needs for sewing, designing and creating.

Starting Your Own Etsy Shop ~ Wednesday, 5/21 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM

Instructor: Sara Selepouchin of the Philadelphia Etsy team and Girls Can Tell

Location: Coral Street Arts House

By now, if you’re a crafts lover, then you’ve heard of Etsy. But what about turning your love into $$ by opening your own Etsy shop? In this class, students will learn the basics of setting up an Etsy shop and a general primer in selling and marketing online. Class topics will include: item naming and descriptions, getting involved in the Etsy community, promoting your Etsy shop, photographing for online selling, pricing your work for internet (retail) sales, creating a consistent brand and visual consistency for your shop, and much, much more!

Basic Corset Construction ~ Wednesdays 5/21-6/18 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM

Instructor: Megan Schwarz

Location: Old Pine Community Center

If you love the look of corsets, but can’t find your size or favorite color, now is your chance to learn to make them! Taught by a full-time lingerie designer with extensive experience in corset design and construction, students will learn how to construct a basic corset complete with metal boning, front busk closure, and center back lacing.

Students will also learn a little about the history of corsetry, the proper way to fit, lace, and unlace corsets, and how to alter the basic pattern to make stylish variations. Materials are included with cost to make one corset; you will also receive the basic pattern to use many times over.

Space is limited to 10 students. Class is geared towards sewers with intermediate/advanced skills.

Summertime Sundress ~ Thursdays, 6/12-6/26 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM

Location: Old Pine Community Center

Summertime- Where the sewing is easy! Whether simple, breezy, or fitted and cool, Philadelphia Sewing Collective has the class for you.

Make your own sundress in this fun-filled three week course. We'll get you ready for the beach party, cruise or afternoon luncheon. In this class, you'll learn about trims, embellishment, different types of hems, plus you'll advance those garment construction skills learned in Sewing Basics!

Sewing Basics is a pre-requisite or prior machine sewing knowledge.

Dress Shirt Alterations ~ Mondays 6/9-6/16 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM

Instructor: Jay Tidwell

Location: Old Pine Community Center

Philadelphia Sewing Collective is very excited to offer another level of clothing alterations- Dress Shirt Alterations. No longer is there a need for boxy fits and dragging sleeves!

Dress shirts in relation to varying body types will be examined. Tapering shirts and positioning darts will be taught, along with basic shortening of shirt sleeves (without moving placket) and making short sleeves out of long sleeve shirts.

Requirements- some knowledge of machine sewing and Intro to Alterations.

Sewing Basics II ~ Fridays, 6/13-6/27 from 7:00 to 9:30 PM

Location: Old Pine Community Center

Re-thread your sewing machines and wind a new bobbin, it's time for Sewing Basics Part 2!

You are now familiar with your machine and can actually make a garment. Yeah! Now let's learn some more!

Follow along as we learn at least 5 types of hems to finish your garment. Learn how to place in zippers in a garment successfully. There will also be waistbands and hooks and eyes. We will be working with a simple pattern that incorporates all of these skills. Students will leave this workshop with their Sewing Basics skills renewed and ready to tackle intermediate projects!
